  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JDB1156 -- This book will piss you off : And now I can't sleep from years of apathy; all because I read a book by this bolshevik revolutionary. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Madeline Parks -- Decent Reading : Although I am an anarchist, Lenin's work is useful in understanding the origins of the state in class society. From the irreconcilable class antagonisms that exist under class societies and the necessity of the state to enforce private property under capitalism, the democratic bourgeois republic emerges alongside the capitalist mode of production. Lenin argued that a Vanguard Party of the proletariat should be mobilized to increase revolutionary class consciousness among the working class, the state machinery of consumer society should be broken up and seized by the proletariat, a democratic dictatorship of the proletariat should use the state to combat reaction by the bourgeoisie, and that the elimination of class hierarchy would lead to the "withering away" of the state. Although Lenin's words resonate well, historically, his actions and words did not match, and overall, I favor anarchism and I would recommend reading Bakunin, Kropotkin, Goldman, Stirner, Proudhon, Bookchin, etc. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JohnnyPrestomatic74 -- Another brilliant masterpiece : Written exactly as the events were unfolding in Petrograd and elsewhere in Russia, this book is virtually dedicated to the denunciations of so-called "revolutionaries" who had in the past and in the 1 917 present watered down Marxism into a virtual collaboration with the bourgeoisie. Lenin also elucidated on what the dictatorship of the proletariat means in Leninist terms, and what the destruction of the capitalist state entails, and should accomplish. Differentiation between the Marxist and anarchist views of these things also clarified. Great companion to "What is to Be Done" and "Imperiaism the highest stage of capitalism." Highly recommended ( Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2018 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Julio Raffaine -- Exploring the mind of Lenin 100 years ago : The confrontational style used in the book, tells a lot about how Lenin thought not only on the matter of the State but overall on social organization. I share many of his views but have found the book too narrow in his foundations, he enshrines Marx and Engels without ever debating their philosophy and work, and diminishes his opponents usually with name calling which tends to strawman them and not take seriously in consideration their arguments. Totally recommend, so that people start to see the man behind the myth. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from kookie womblat -- The State- do you need it? : A very insightful read - whether or not one agrees with Lenin's expectations for a Marxist economic system, his views on taking charge of your government's program is as relevant to us today as it was for him then. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Christian -- Its Great : Show your not an opportunist or a petty bourgeoisie by reading this book. Its a pretty nice look into Lenin's perspective on the state and what should happen to it in the event of a proletariat revolution ,although i feel he spends a bit to much time combating other socialist works and viewpoints instead of expanding on his own. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James Kalomiris, The Peripatetic Reader -- Still Required Reading : There are no shortage of reviews for this classic, for good reason. For all their influence and relevance, both Marx, but not so much Engels, did not leave behind a coherent doctrine, with elements of their philosophy scattered among many writings. The function of State and Revolution is to connect the dots and give a coherent, clear message of Marxian theory. It remains one of the clearest explanations of the Communist system. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marie J. -- I read this with a blind eye. : Honestly, it's a very hard read. Since the text is very rich in big words and foundations that take a long time to make it's point and conclude what neds to be said. However, it doesn't make the book less revolutionary. I think there should be some deeper analysis version of the book to help beginners like me understand it better. I had to go to secondary sources to understand the full points throughout this book but it's worth it if you're into the topics. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from X A Edwards -- A historic and Intresting Book : Personally, I didn't enjoy reading it because Vladimir Lenin is an extreme revolutionary which I fundamentally disagree with his whole interpretation of the Manifesto. Throughout the book you will be bombarded with extreme bolshevism, (Naturally). However as a historical piece of literature its a fascinating read. You get to understand the thought process of the extremists and their views. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from wac -- Informative and thought provoking : As a piece of history it is informative, if you want to know more about Lenin then this is a good starting point. If you want to look good on the tube then the cover will do that for you too. If, however, your aim is to think about what you are reading and how it may still be relevant, or not, then this book is an excellent buy. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 24, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Dniho -- Quality issues : Very disappointed with this Kindle edition as it has some serious quality issues - for instance, a lot of paragraphs are not being finished proprerly: text is breaking up and you don't know if it cuts off the sentence and continues the same one in the next paragraph, or just cuts off the whole idea and jumps onto the next one.. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 17, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Account -- Very good : I ordered the paper back version and it has a very nice quality cover, the print inside is very good and clear, the book arrived quick and on time with the only problem being a small tear on the back. Not sure if that happened during delivery or at the Amazon warehouse, regardless I'm not going to rate them down for it as accidents do happen and I doubt all their books are damaged. Overall its definitely worth the price! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ellie -- Interesting to get into the mind of Lenin : This book is an interesting read. Lenin certainly seems to have a sense of humour when writing this, even if it is in the form of dry wit which comes out now and again, thankfully keeping this from growing too dry. There is no mistake that this is an academic piece, citing much of Engels and Marx, rather than a revolutionary pamphlet. For any scholar of revolutions, Lenin, or pre-1918 Europe, this is a must-read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2015 )
